Even though the holiday season is at the end of the year, it’s almost like it comes back in an instant. While the top of our list is always to decorate the home and buy the perfect presents for everyone in time, we forget that our homes are pretty much-wrapped presents for burglars!
As much as we’d want the holiday season to be time for cheer, it’s not always like that. There are several break-ins that happen throughout the world at this time of the year, and that’s pretty inevitable if you’re not being proactive about your security.
In this article, we’re going to be going over some of the major things you need to do to prepare your home for the holiday season, to keep yourself, and your family as safe as possible!
#1: Get your locks examined
This is something you should be doing a couple of times a year anyway, but especially during the holiday season. Make sure that all of the locks in your home are functioning properly. If anything isn’t functioning optimally, you can have the locks repaired or replaced before it’s too late!
#2: Secure the packages
If you’re like most people and have done all of your Christmas shopping in a frenzy online, chances are you’re going to be receiving a lot of packages. Even if your house doesn’t get fully broken into, chances are that you might become a target for package thieves! Make sure you either have a doorbell camera installed so every time there’s a package on your door, you get notified, and anytime someone tries to steal your packages, you’ll get a photo of them too!
#3: Keep the bragging to a minimum
Who doesn’t love nice things? Well, while receiving great gifts is a fun experience, it’s also important that we keep the bragging to a minimum. The more people that know that you’re receiving extravagant gifts, or have bought them for other people, the more you put yourself at risk for a burglary! Enjoy your gifts, on your own, not with everyone you know!
#4: Keep the home occupied, even if you’ve got to fake it
A lot of people have extensive traveling plans over the holiday season. If you’re someone that tends to lock everything up and leave the home for an extended period of time, that’s something you should change when the holiday season rolls around. Even if your house isn’t occupied, it should look that way. Leave a couple of lights on, and make sure all the mail is being picked up by a family member or friend. That way, even if no one’s home, it’ll look like there is, making a burglary, far less likely to happen!
#5: Keep your plans private
Finally, no matter how fun your holiday plans are, make sure the people that know about them are the people you can actually trust! Anyone in your extended circle could be dangerous. If you don’t really know someone very well, it’s never a guarantee that they’ll have your best interest at heart. You could tell someone your plans thinking you’re just telling a friend, and they could end up spreading that information to someone dangerous, or worse, be the danger themselves! To protect your home, you have to make sure that the only people that know all of your plans are the ones that have proven to be trustworthy!
